While many small school systems struggle, the Buffalo Lake-Hector School District is thriving. In January 2008, the U.S. News and World Report  evaluated 1800 schools nationally and awarded BLH High School with a Bronze Award for educational outcomes.  

Buffalo Lake-Hector Public Schools is a rural Pre-K through 12th grade school with two campus locations. Kindergarten through grade 5 is in Buffalo Lake. Pre-school and grades 6-12 are a short 5-mile bus ride away in Hector. The school district also enjoys a growing number of open enrollment students from the surrounding area. 

The employees of BLH are guided by the goal statement "Learning is a Lifestyle" and learning involves constant change. Due to the goal statement and the cooperative efforts of the public, employees and students, the results are very impressive for a small school. 

The smaller rural setting allows students to experience personalized educational programs and many opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular activities.
